Diamond shape is one of the first factors considered while buying a Diamond. Shape is the face-up outline of a Diamond. While round diamonds make the popular choice, other shapes also have a distinctive look and are called ‘Fancy Diamonds’. Fancy Diamonds include Oval, Cushion, Princess, Pear, Emerald, Marquise, Asscher, Radiant and Heart shaped diamonds.

HOW DOES DIAMOND SHAPE AFFECT DIAMOND SIZE?

 

The proportion by which a diamond is cut, it changes the way size might be perceived with different shapes. Round diamonds are brilliant at showing their size and weight whereas elongated shapes, like oval and marquise, tend to appear larger. Diamonds like Princess and  Asscher cut Diamond appear larger in size compared to the round shapes.

WHAT IS THE BOWTIE EFFECT WITH DIAMONDS?

Bow-tie is a dark area across the centre of an elongated brilliant diamond caused by the proportions by which the diamond is cut.

The bow tie effect is very subjective and depends on each individual stone.

To access a bow-tie, one should look at the stone face up, without magnification under normal lighting conditions.

WHAT IS THE RECOMMENDED LENGTH-TO-WIDTH (L:W) RATIO FOR EACH DIAMOND SHAPE?

A numerical expression of the ratio between length and width of a fancy cut, where the value for width is one.

Along with the stones general shape appeal the L:W ratio is  very subjective to personal preference.

 

Preferred L:W ratios are:

Oval           1.33-1.66 : 1

Emerald     1.50 - 1.75 : 1

Heart          1.00 : 1

Marquise    1.75 - 2.25 : 1

Pear            1.50-1.75 : 1
